Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

Image
What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?   At The Well Woman, one of our main treatment approaches when working with individuals is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). CBT was developed by psychiatrist Aaron Beck, MD in the early 1960’s. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is popular among mental health professionals, as it is evidence-based. Currently, more than 500 outcome studies have demonstrated the efficacy of CBT for a wide range of psychiatric disorders, psychological problems, and medical problems with psychological components (Butler, Chapman, Forman, Beck, 2006; Chambless; Ollendeck, 2001). In a nutshell, the CBT model proposes that dysfunctional thinking, which influences our mood and behavior, is common to all psychological disturbances.

Can Counseling Help With Depression? Depression Counseling We treat depressive disorders at The Well Woman. Depression can be a symptom or disorder. People often casually describe their mood as “depressed” when it may be mild sadness that quickly goes away or just being in a “funk” that also quickly subsides. Many of us experience an occasional bad day, when for no apparent reason we feel glum, irritable, or out of sorts. However, diagnosable or clinical depression lasts for more than a day or two and you do not just bounce back from a glum mood. There is often significant impairment in one’s life as a result of a depressed mood relating to sleep, appetite, thoughts, school or employment, and relationships. Common depressive disorders we see in our practice include Major Depressive Disorder and Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia). We also see individuals with depression caused by a medical condition. It is sometimes difficult to describe a depressed mood as ind...

Be Assertive During our treatment with individuals at The Well Woman , we sometimes see the underlying theme of lack of assertiveness. Assertiveness is the quality of being self-assured and confident without being aggressive. Assertiveness is expressing our needs without violating others. We view assertiveness as a mode of communication and learnable skill. When individuals are passive, they are often left feeling dissatisfied, overlooked, and worthless because their needs are not getting met and their boundaries are being disregarded. These feelings can turn into resentment for one’s self and others and lead to feelings of anxiety or a depressed mood. When what we feel does not align with what we think or do, this creates dissonance in our body which feels like anxiety. We may even begin to think our voice or opinion does not matter and should be overlooked which feeds feelings of low self-worth. In an attempt to avoid direct confrontation, we may become resentful towards o...
